"Dragon's Claw" Finger Millet
Eleusine coracana
Dragon’s Claw, also called Finger Millet or Ragi, was domesticated in Ethiopia and the Ugandan highlands from the wild E. coracana subsp. africana over 5000 years ago. It was carefully introduced into the agrarian landscape by selecting seed heads that refrained from shattering as the highly nutritious grain ripened. In the first century BCE Finger Millet found its way to India where it has become widely incorporated into the cultural cuisine, used in many dishes including dosa (fermented griddlecake) and kanji (porridge). An incredible food crop able to grow at over 6,600 feet in elevation. A nice stand of Finger Millet is truly a sight to behold, like many hands reaching up to the big blue above. The birds left our Dragon's Claw untouched in the field and we are curious to see if they are merely timid to try an unfamiliar grain of if they are wholly uninterested. Updates to follow!
