Leonurus cardiaca
Motherwort is a perennial herb of the mint family native to Europe. It is utterly adored by our pollinator friends in the garden. You can anticipate lovely soft pink-purple (fuzzy!) flowers in its second year. Gorgeous purple/green deeply veined leaves of a unique serrated shape. Once established, it is one of the earliest greens to peek out after the winter snows melt away. The entire herb can be harvested after it flowers either to dry for infusions or to use fresh for tinctures. Traditionally used as an acrid bitter to calm the sympathetic nervous system, as a heart tonic and as a mild sedative for nervousness with heart palpitations. Motherwort has strong ties to female reproductive health with extensive traditional uses for premenstrual, menstrual, postpartum and menopausal discomforts, complications and imbalances. Such a nurturing, supportive and stabilizing friend to meet in the garden.
Not appropriate for use during pregnancy.
