No-till Farming: Inviting Biodiversity

We are always delighted to watch the Luna moths return to our gardens each mating season. In early June we found these Luna moths in our no-till Piracicaba Broccolini bed. Each year we are gifted with sightings and signs of their presence. Sightings of a Luna moth can be rare. This is because a Luna moth is only in its winged adult form for a 7 to 10 day period, after about 12 months of metamorphosis. The sole focus of their short adult life is to find a mate and create progeny. Luna moths develop into adults without even a mouth and gather all of the energy they need to procreate in their larval stage.

Luna moths, like many others, are very sensitive to environmental changes such as light pollution and deforestation. Finding safe and supportive breeding grounds in one week's time is challenging on developed land. No-till farms and gardens support not only human habitation, but maintain habitats for beneficial insects as well. No-till agriculture builds a thriving future for plant, insect, animal, and human coexistence and interdependence.
