Phaseolus vulgaris
Golden Gate is a delectable yellow pole Romano bean. Buttery, sweet and nutty flavor intrinsic to heirloom Romanos, but with a sleek lemon-yellow hue. The highly productive plants produce pods up to 8" to 10" in length that remain succulent even as they begin to develop their seed. Pair with Nor'easter and Gigante Violetto for stunning mixed displays at market or in the homestead kitchen. Harvest often to keep production going and you will be rewarded with a heavy elongated harvest.
Growing Instructions:
Direct sow after last chance of frost.
Seed spacing: 4” to 6” apart
Row spacing: 4’ apart
Provide at least 5’ trellis.
Beans fix their own nitrogen so fertilizer should not be too rich or there will be too much foliage at the expense of pods. A well-balanced, well-cured compost and a sprinkle of wood-ash should be adequate. Make sure soil pH is between 5.8 and 7.0.
One planting will last all season.
Harvest Instructions:
Harvest when pods are purple in color, about 7-8 inches long, and before beans develop in pods. Beans should be tender and not fibrous for the best fresh eating and cooking experience
