Kali Black Gram is a common variety grown thoughout India and Nepal. This strain was given to Adaptive Seeds by Anpetu Oihankesni of Sourcepoint Seeds who encountered the seeds in Bhaktapur of the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. Black Gram is a delicious, protein rich and nutrient dense staple and can be used in curries, sprouted and ground into sourdough flatbreads. The plant of Kali Black Mung Bean are very well adapted to the damp short season of the Northeast and similar climates and dry down beautifully in early September.
Growing Instructions:
Direct sow 4-6” apart in rows 12” apart.
Fertilization not usually required.
Place a bit of balanced compost and sprinkling of woodash in each hole at time of planting.
Harvest Instructions:
Let beans pods dry down on plants and cut down to thresh OR in wetter years, allow plants to turn yellow and beans to attain their mature coloring in the field. Then cut the plants to hang and dry down in a covered, warm and well ventilated space.
